5 Tips to Extend the Life of your Carpet

 In Carpet Cleaning, How-To's

Consistently maintaining your carpet will stretch your dollar and will also add value to your home. Tile is great, and hardwood is amazing, but there’s nothing like the feel of soft fibers between your toes. Homeowners may come to appreciate the following tips on how to extend carpet life.

No matter what color carpet you have in your home, dirt and dust trapped in carpet fibers will cause wear and tear. If you don’t maintain your carpets regularly you may be subject to discoloration and deterioration of high-traffic areas where dirt and dust can work its way into the bottom of your carpet, causing hard to remove stains.

Vacuum Regularly

Vacuuming 2-4 times per week can help pick up excess dirt that’s been tracked into your house. Pet owners may want to vacuum more frequently to pick up the excess hair your little family member tracks in. Using a vacuum that’s air-tight ensures all the dirt actually stays inside of the vacuum. If it’s time to purchase a new vacuum, be sure to do thorough research; the most expensive vacuum may not necessarily be the best for your home.

Shoes off

Taking your shoes off at the door may be one of the best tips anyone can suggest. When you wear your outdoor shoes inside the house, you track in dust and dirt. Make it easy for your family to remember to take their shoes off when they enter the house by adding a few shoe racks, or even a small bench for them to relax a little while they remove their shoes. Reduce allergens that can spread throughout your house, and keep track of everyone’s shoes all at once! You can get the little ones on-board by offering them some fancy house-only shoes they can flop around in.

Hire a professional

Hiring a professional cleaner is a great step to take when it comes to keeping your carpet looking, feeling, and smelling it’s best. Homes with pets, small children, or smokers will definitely need a more frequent deep-cleaning. Of course you may come across some “deep-cleaning machines” in your local grocery store, but if you aren’t sure how to properly utilize those machines, it may lead to carpet mold and other carpet damage. Nothing can get your carpets looking as new as a professional carpet cleaning service. Homeowners should get their carpets thoroughly cleaned once ever 6-12 months, depending on the traffic.

Spring cleaning should include furniture rearranging

Furniture being fixated in one spot for years can cause indentations in your carpet that may be hard to fluff back up. Having stagnant furniture can also highlight your high-traffic areas where your guests can see trails of dirt.  Spread out the wear and tear on your carpet and rearrange your furniture from time to time. Also, this will give you a chance to spruce up your home!

Clean spills immediately

Cleaning up spills as soon as they happen can help reduce the chance of stains setting in permanently. Spraying grocery-bought cleaners onto stains may alter the color of your carpet and leave a filmy/soapy residue on your carpet fibers, making it nearly impossible to thoroughly clean afterwards.  Instead, immediately blot the area with water and a clean terry cloth – never scrub the carpet clean as it may push the dirt deeper into the carpet and cause fraying of the carpet fibers.
